With a contemporary sound rich in influences from jazz, pop, soul, and folk music, the ensemble uses Whitman’s words to celebrate nature, humanity, and democratic society. Their music and his poetry are thus beautifully combined.
Whitman is considered one of the most influential poets in American and world literature from the 1830s and 1840s in the New England region of the United States, and is often referred to as the father of free verse.
Singer Vita Pagie introduced Whitman to the rest of the band:
“I’d been familiar with Whitman’s poetry for some time, but only the famous lines. When I delved deeper, I discovered so much more beauty, and I was captivated by it. His poetry often describes exactly how I feel and experience things—very much in the moment, through my senses. Since I moved from the city to a farm, this connection with Whitman has only grown stronger. I enjoy exploring the intersections between music and other art forms, so for me, compositions emerged naturally, which we then developed and arranged together as a collective.”
